Two phases
Lead abatement consists of two phases: surface preparation and removal of the lead-based paint.
Surface prep
In the surface preparation phase, all loose paint chips must be removed from walls and ceilings before any attempt is made to remove the remaining paint.
Removal
The remaining paint must then be removed using one of three methods: wet scraping, dry sanding, or heat gun application. The type of method used depends on the amount of remaining lead-based paint and its condition.
